How I Built A $1M Business From a Starbucks
"6 years ago, I started a business. Today, that business makes over a million dollars a year, but what nobody knows is that I built it inside of a Starbucks."
This is the story of Pat Walls, the founder of Starter Story, and how he built a million-dollar business with only two hours a day while working a full-time job.
1. The 9-to-5 Emptiness
In 2017, Pat was 26 years old, living in New York City with a six-figure job. By all accounts, he was living the dream. But he felt empty.
"Every day I go to work and do the same thing: clock in, a few Zoom meetings, eat lunch, write a few lines of code, and clock out. This work leaves me feeling empty every day. I know this isn't what I was meant to do."
He dreamed of quitting his job and starting a business, but he was paralyzed by one problem: he had no idea where to start.
2. The Lightbulb Moment
His frustration became his inspiration. He couldn't find information on how real people started successful businesses, so he decided to create it himself.
The Idea: "I'll just research successful businesses, write about my findings on a blog, and share them with others who also want to learn."
This was the beginning of Starter Story. But the idea nagged at him for months. He was suffocated by self-doubt and couldn't bring himself to start.
3. The Daily Battle with Starbucks
Every day on his walk home from work, Pat would pass a specific Starbucks. And every day, he would have the same internal battle.
"Every day, I tell myself I'll stop in there, order a drink, sit down, and get started on this idea. But every single day, I walk by that Starbucks, take one hard look at it, proceed to not go inside, walk home, and watch 6 hours of Netflix."
This went on for months until he stumbled upon a book that would change his life: "Deep Work" by Cal Newport. The book gave him a framework for distraction-free, focused work.
4. The Power of Deep Work
Armed with the principles of Deep Work, Pat finally walked into that Starbucks. He created a ritual.
The Daily Routine:
- Walk into Starbucks after work.
- Put on headphones and a specific playlist.
- Turn off his phone and block all distracting websites.
- Work for 2 hours with intense focus.
"I did this every single day for 365 days. And at the end of that year, I had built a business that was making $600 a month."
It wasn't much, but it was proof. It was a profitable business built in the margins of his life.
5. Scaling the Side Hustle
That $600/month was the spark. He continued to reinvest his time and energy.
- The First Viral Moment: A post he wrote for his blog got shared on
Redditand went viral, bringing in his first real audience and email subscribers. - Quitting His Job: After a year and a half, the business was making enough money for him to quit his 9-to-5 and go full-time.
- Building a Team: He eventually hired a team to help him grow the business to where it is today.
"It all started inside this Starbucks with a two-hour-a-day habit. And that is my starter story."
Pat's journey shows that you don't need to quit your job or have a revolutionary idea to start. You just need a system for focused work and the discipline to show up every day.
